How to Clean a Child's Car Seat Safely
Child car seats collect crumbs, milk and worse, but they're safety equipment, so cleaning them has rules. Always check your seat's manual first; manufacturers differ.
What's usually safe
- Vacuuming every crevice and under the base
- Machine-washing the fabric cover on gentle, if the manual allows, and air-drying it
- Wiping the plastic shell with mild soap and water
- Steam on the cover and shell, used carefully
What to avoid
- Harsh chemicals and bleach on harness straps. They can weaken the webbing.
- Machine-washing or submerging straps. Most manufacturers say surface-clean only.
- Lubricating the buckle. Rinse it in warm water if the manual allows.
- Reassembling it wrong. Take photos before you take it apart.
The easy way
Our child car seat cleaning add-on is $30, done with steam and a vacuum only, no chemicals. You reinstall the seat afterward so the fit is right. Interior car detailing.
